How to choose the right chandelier size and its placement

How to choose the right chandelier size and its placement

The first step in buying a chandelier is to choose the right size chandelier. However, where a chandelier
is placed in your home can affect the size. To avoid the guesswork, please follow our sizing and placement
tips.

Choose the right size chandelier

No matter what type of chandelier you are looking for - crystal chandelier, glass ball chandelier, marble chandelier,
ginkgo chandelier, candle chandelier or other design - space size is a key factor in choosing the size of a
chandelier. If the light is too big or too small, the room will look disorganized. Before you start shopping, we
recommend that you measure the length and width of the room and the height of the ceiling.

  • Diameter of the chandelier
To determine the best diameter for your space, do the following:
Measure the length and width of the room in
feet.
Example: 12' X 14'
Add the two lengths together.
For example, 12 + 14 = 26 feet
Swap the value in feet
for inches (so 26 feet becomes 26 inches)
For example: 26 feet > 26 inches
This is the ideal diameter
for a light fixture in this room:26 inches wide

  • The height of the chandelier

To determine the best height for your space, do the following:
Measure the height of the room in
feet (floor to ceiling).
Example: 10’ tall
Multiply the height by 2.5 -3 per foot.
Example: 10 x
2.5 - 3 = 25-30 feet
Swap this value for inches (so feet become inches).
For example: 25-30 feet > 25-30
inches
This is the ideal height for a light fixture in this room: 25-30
inches

So you will need to look for a light fixture that is about 22’’ wide and 25-30’’ high.

The placement of the chandelier

The placement of the chandelier mainly includes two factors: the position in the room and the distance between the
hanging height of the chandelier and the ground.

The installation of the chandelier in the wrong position will affect the overall beauty of the room - if the
chandelier is hung too low, it will prevent people in the home from walking; If the chandelier is hung too high, the
light may be too dim to use. When placing a chandelier in a particular room, please refer to the following
recommendations.

  • Restaurant

Hanging height: The bottom of the chandelier should be suspended 30 inches to 36 inches above the table.

Hanging position: Install the lamp above the middle of the table, not in the middle of the room. If you have a pantry
or buffet table, your dining table may be located outside the center of the room, so a chandelier hanging in the
middle of the space can be dazzling.

  • Above the kitchen island

Hanging height: The bottom of the chandelier should be hung 30 inches to 36 inches above the table.

Hanging position: Place the chandelier in the center of the island. However, if you are hanging multiple chandeliers
or mini chandeliers, we recommend placing the lights along the center line of the island, 30 inches away from each
other. If you have three lights, place one above the middle of the island, then hang the other two from each side 30
inches apart.

  • Entrance, bedroom or living room

Hanging height: People may walk under fixtures and need to maintain a gap of 7 feet from the bottom of the light to
the ground. However, if your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, the installation height of the chandelier should
increase by 3 inches for each additional 8 feet.
If your foyer is two stories, the base of the light fixture
should be at the same height as the second floor.

Hanging position: If your foyer is large, placing a chandelier above a round table
will be impressive. At the small entrance, the chandelier should hang in the middle of the room.

Tip: If the chandelier is hanging in the bedroom or living room, place it in the middle of the room or above the bed.
Mini chandeliers also look good hanging above the nightstand.

  • The Bathroom

Hanging height: At least 8 feet from the top of the bathtub rim.

Hanging position: Due to strict building codes for humid environments, the chandelier must be at least 3 feet from
the edge of the bathtub or shower.

Tip: For safety reasons, make sure the chandelier is enclosed or suitable for humid environments.

  • Stairs

Hanging height: The base of the luminaire should be at least 30 inches from any table or object below it.

Hanging position: If your stairs have two levels, fixtures should not be suspended
below the second floor.
